| The Artist
Sybil currently works and lives in Northern Ireland, but also spends a
considerable part of her time in Scotland, having both lived and
worked there for a number of years.
With family and friends in both
countries Sybil’s connection with Scotland and Ireland is strongly
reflected in her work.
The Work
Mixed media is the essence of Sybil’s work. Coming from a textile art
background Sybil has always combined 2 or more different media using
screen printing, oils, acrylics, dyes and or collage with embroidery.
More recently she has been exploring photography/digital imaging
and is currently developing new work which incorporates elements of
these newer media with oils, acrylics and printmaking to bring a new
dimension to her work.
Inspiration
As always the work is inspired by not just landscape, but a deeper
connection with the land and its various elements. This ranges from
moody, dramatic, open hill, bog and moorland spaces – sometimes
lonely, threatening, brooding, sometimes calm, beautiful, peaceful
havens – to close up , tiny, abstract detail of pieces of foliage, a
peat bank, a corner of a particular place or the heart of a flower.
Her style combines both figurative and abstract imagery through a play
on scale, often taking one subject and interpreting this in a variety
of ways using photography, drawing, painting, printing and stitching.
Themes
The same themes and subjects recur time and time again. Using the
landscapes of Ireland and Scotland as her inspiration Sybil is never
short of either subject matter or inspiration.
Sybil’s work expresses something about the place she is using as her
subject, whether this is a mood, a feeling or a quality. Whilst the
human figure rarely appears, the connection between The Human Spirit,
The Human Condition and The Land is always present in her work.
In some of her current and most recent photographic/creative imaging
work Sybil does use personal imagery of people close to her to reflect
upon and express some of the emotion surrounding some of these human
conditions.
Connection with the land and all its elements is her constant source
of passion and inspiration. |
